Personal Branding for Small Businesses

A guest article from our trusted photography partner, Donna Loring. Photos shown are a small sample of Donna's work.

As a business owner, you know that you having a consistent brand is key to a successful business. Branding gives your business a personality and helps it stand out.

You can use it to deliver the message you want to share, inspire customer loyalty and even demand higher prices for your work.

Branding is something you think about when working on your business, from choosing colours for your website, a font for your business cards, and the wording on your social media posts.

Branding is why you have a dedicated business email address, instead of a gmail or hotmail account.

You work hard to ensure your business is successful. You hire a professional to design your logo, you pay extra for thick card stock so your business cards look luxurious. You carefully consider all you social media posts, to ensure you stay on message.

So, why is your headshoot a 3 year old image of you drinking cocktails in Santorini? Is it because you had a tan? Because you looked slimmer or younger?

It's totally understandable to want to look good, but your images should also represent your brand. So unless you're selling tequila or holidays to Greece, the holiday snaps have to go, sorry!

You are your brand

As a small business, you are your brand. Think of how many people first meet you online instead of in person. It's probably most of your network, right? For all those people, your headshot is their first impression of you. I'm sure you don't need to be reminded of the importance first impressions.

Don't worry, you're not alone. Many people in business avoid getting professional photographs taken, even though they know it will be great for their personal branding. Here are some of the reasons people give me for putting off their personal branding session.

  • I'm waiting until I lose weight
  • I don't know what to wear
  • I'm not photogenic
  • I feel self conscious in front of the camera
  • I don't know how to pose

It's totally normal to have concerns like this, but you know what? Being photogenic is a skill. You can be taught what to wear and how to pose to give you the best possible images of yourself. That's why you hire a professional photographer. Making you look good is their job, not yours. A good photographer will listen to your concerns and offer you advice. During your session, your photographer will guide you through how to pose to get images that are flattering and natural.

It's time to ditch those holiday pictures and move your business to the next level with images that truly represent you and your brand!
